Motorists could see delays along Route 100 in Lower Macungie Township beginning Monday as UGI Utilities works on a gas main project along the highway.
UGI says the work will be primarily between Quarry Road and Spring Creek Road just south of Trexlertown. Construction will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and is expected to be completed by the end of November.
Route 100 will be reduced to one lane in the construction zone during work hours.
UGI is installing 4,300 feet of high-pressure steel pipeline to provide additional natural gas to the area.
UGI spokesperson Joseph Swope said the project is reinforcing an existing main that runs along the highway.
“This is actually adding supply to the area because of higher demand,” Swope said. “This is actually a reinforcement rather than a replacement project.”
It is the latest project for UGI in the Lehigh Valley, which is replacing about 70 miles of cast iron and bare steel mains this year. Swope said he was not aware of any other major reinforcement projects scheduled locally.
The Lancaster County utility, which is a subsidiary of UGI Corp., sells natural gas to about 700,000 customers in 45 Pennsylvania counties.
