Including a four-in-one oven-safe wok/steamer/casserole dish for just £69.99
Baker, TV chef and author of no less than 11 cookbooks, Nadiya Hussain captured our hearts after winning the 2015 series of The Great British Bake Off. Now, in collaboration with Prestige, she's released her first range of cookware and bakeware for your own kitchen.
Costing from £6 to £189.99 for a set of four saucepans, the range comprises a selection of 18 kitchen essentials. Included is a decent selection of oven trays, cake and loaf tins (naturally), along with a couple of cast iron pieces, a stacking saucepan set and a game-changing multipurpose wok/steamer.
On first look, we were pleased by how versatile every item is. Everything has multiple uses, meaning that these buys won't end up taking up precious real estate in your heaving cupboards and then go languishing unused for months.
Intrigued to see if using the range could turn me into a master baker myself (perhaps a tall order, admittedly), I gave a few pieces from the range a try over the course of a month to see how they fared. See what I thought below.
In a busy house where storage space is at a premium, anything that's designed to cut down on clutter is always going to be well received, so I knew this wok-cum-steamer would be a hit in my household.
The steamer function works better than my Always pan – there's a good deep space to fill with water, avoiding the risk of either the pan boiling dry if you don't add enough, or inadvertently poaching the vegetables by adding too much.
I was impressed with the non-stick and, although it's more of a medium-sized pan than a large one, its depth means it fits a surprising amount (another hit for those who dread heading into their cluttered cupboards).
Of course, I made a stir-fry at first but, really, you're not limited to these with this wok. The fact that it comes with the glass lid makes it a perfectly decent saucepan for curries, risottos and the like, again upping the multi-purpose factor. It's oven-safe too for dishes that require a second bake. All in all, great value at just £69.99 – very impressive.
For me, this is the hero item of those I tried. I've always had trepidation about cast iron, thinking it heavy, difficult to store and manoeuvre, and tricky to clean. This pan, however, has changed my mind. It came pre-seasoned so as to avoid it rusting and, while you can continue to oil it should you desire, this isn't necessary. I give mine a gentle scrub with a soft sponge and a dab of soap and it's been perfect every time.
I've used it on the stove top and in the oven, for both desserts (my favourite cinnamon buns worked a treat in here) and main courses (two different chicken dishes, one one-pot meal with rice and veg, plus some jerk-rubbed thighs) all of which came out beautifully.
It fits a good four portions inside without feeling unwieldily, retains heat well – and looks lovely, making it a good oven-to-table dish (naturally, as the whole thing goes in the oven, it does get hot so be mindful of this!). This saves on washing up, too.
It is heavier than a normal frying pan, of course, but the quality is great. Importantly, the thickness and weight of the iron means it's unlikely to warp in the heat, as some of my more lightweight pans have done after a year or so of use.
While it's difficult to be too effusive over a baking tray, if you're looking to replace your old worn-out collection at home, this is a worthy contender. It's a good size for family roasts and the ridging on the bottom means you're less likely to destroy your fluffy roasties if they end up getting stuck when it's time to plate up; I've not experienced any disasters as yet.
It washes well, too. I've used mine most days over the past month and it still looks good-as-new.
Overall, if you're looking to replenish your kitchen kit or experiment with something new, like my first foray into cooking with cast iron, I'd recommend this range. It's reasonably priced, washes well and covers everything you'll need to cook and bake on an every day basis. It wins extra points for space-saving, like the stackable pans and the multi-use wok, too.
If you must pick one item, I'd recommend the cast iron frying pan – it's massively versatile and, with care, should last for years.
