Unknowingly, there are food items that we eat almost every day and can work wonders for weight loss, only if we eat them in the right way. One such perfect example is that of onions.
Although onions are a common ingredient in practically every cuisine, most people are unaware of how onions can also help with weight loss, especially by assisting to get rid of stubborn belly fat. Excess visceral fat in the abdomen raises the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease as well as metabolic abnormalities.
Onions are a potent prebiotic food since they have a very low-calorie count and a high soluble viscous fibre content.
The nutritional value per cup (160 grammes) of chopped onion is 64 calories, 15 grammes of carbohydrate, 16 grammes of fat, 7 grammes of fibre, 76 grammes of protein, 78 grammes of sugar, and 12 percent of the recommended value for vitamin C, vitamin B-6, and manganese.
Along with the antioxidants like Quercetin and Sulphur, onions also have trace levels of calcium, iron, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium.
The soluble fibre in onions can help an individual feel fuller for longer and consume fewer calories, which will further help in weight loss. Onion contains a flavonoid called Quercetin, which is known to promote metabolism and help prevent the buildup of fat.
Onions are abundant in Inulin and fructooligosaccharides, two prebiotics essential for a healthy gut. They can strengthen one’s immune system and raise the number of beneficial microorganisms in the stomach.
People with diabetes or prediabetes may benefit from onions' Sulphur and Quercetin components, which help regulate blood sugar.
Onions' high vitamin C level helps with collagen formation, which gives skin and hair smoother texture. It works in conjunction with Vitamin A to reduce pigmentation and shields skin from UV rays.
Adding onion to the diet can help improve bone health as it contains a good amount of calcium.
Onions have more than 25 different types of flavonoid antioxidants, which can prevent the production of free radicals that can aggravate conditions including cancer, diabetes, and heart disease

The best method to enjoy all the health benefits of onion is in this way. The onion should be peeled, cut into slices, and boiled in water for four to five minutes. Next, thoroughly combine it, and sip the juice.
Soups are incredibly nutrient-dense and are fantastic for assisting with weight loss. Here is how to make the perfect onion soup.
1. In a soup pot, add olive oil.
2. Add the grated ginger and garlic and cook for 2 minutes.
3. Next, add chopped onions and prepared vegetables such as tomatoes and cabbage. Cook them for 30 seconds and stir occasionally.
4. Now either add chicken or veggie stock.
5. Add salt and pepper for taste after cooking it for at least 10 to 15 minutes.
6. Garnish it with handful of cilantros
Eating raw is ideal since one can obtain the most amount of nutrients from the onions. Slices of raw onion to be put in a bowl along with some lime juice and pink salt. Take this with lunch or dinner as a side dish or one can simply include sliced onion in salad.
